Core Strength
Healthy posture depends on being able to distinguish between two different types of core muscle support, the inner core muscles and the outer core muscles.
The Inner Core
The primary muscle of the inner corset is the transversus abdominis (TA). The TA works with the multifidi muscles in your lumbar spine to stabilize your lower back.
The Outer Core
The outer core muscles are your rectus abdominis (abs) and your obliques. These muscles bend your trunk forward and move it from side to side. These muscles provide general trunk stability, but are not attached to the spine like the inner core muscles and therefore do not give it direct support.
The Core and Lower Back Pain
Studies have shown that people who
Most fitness programs promote core strengthening that exercise the outer core muscles. But overworking the outer core muscles can weaken the inner core muscles.
